“I spend several weeks a year with my sister and mother in Fairford. This small town has the river Coln, a chalk stream, running through it. Its source is in Cirencester. The plants that grow by the river are always so lush and green and varied and in May /June there is a huge number of Mayfly and dragon flies. I was drawn to the beautiful Comfrey with its nodding purple flower and the more I painted the more diversity I could find: nettles, dog rose, grasses, buttercups. I  hope the viewers experience of the painting is the same as mine. At first you see a mass of green but take a closer look and small details are revealed. It’s like going on a curious adventure. This painting is on canvas which is very portable when un stretched and easy to take around . One of the challenges I face working with watercolour and water soluble oil is I have to keep my canvas/paper  flat. I often like to work quite big so finding a place where I can sit and spread out is a challenge and can dictate what I paint. The spot I found was perfect, plenty of flat dry grass and the sound of the river bubbling away in front of me. This painting began outside, then I bought some plants back with me to complete in the studio. Comfy does not like being picked and dropped immediately ( a frequent problem for me) so I had to use  photo reference for this.”
