REALITY : experienced, abstracted and reimagined
Sally Burch graduated from Central St Martins, London with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Fine Art. Since graduating she’s been working as a full time artist and curator exhibiting in galleries in London, Essex and Suffolk.
She has spent time drawing inspiration from the North Essex landscape where she lives, turning the visual cues into a personal abstract, artistic language made of geometric structuring, mark-making and patterning. Her paintings scramble together snippets of this information with other experienced places, both physical and virtual, to present a ‘compilation landscape’. The selection of hues, their location and worked surfaces are decisive factors. Layering paint or exposing the substrate, heighten the patterning and mark-making.
The work is a reconstructed, collaged tableaux of nowhere, but with the perception of being somewhere. After all, it was Plato who said that beauty lies not in the real world but in geometry. Albeit, her work is not calculated but intuitive and expressionistic – where the colour and forms that have been selected represent chromatic harmonies of the spaces we inhabit.
