    Kate Henderson

Born in Dorset, Kate Henderson is a sculptor now based near Midhurst, West Sussex. Her sculpture is centred on a purity and simplicity of form and finish, creating seemingly effortless, tactile and curvaceous abstract sculptures.

These very modern pieces are crafted using traditional skills and tools, and the finished results reflect both her passion for finish and her creative freedom in shape and form.

Her contemporary abstract sculptures are made using a process called direct carving. This can be a long process, as it means working directly in response to the material, with no pre-planned form in mind. Kate refers to these as ‘conversations’ with the material – mostly wood.

Her often colourful, limited edition cast work is always derived from these original carvings. She says that sometimes, during the carving process a shape will call out to be explored further in different mediums, colours, and transparencies.

Kate has a background in designing large scale art installations for international museums, luxury brands and hospitality venues. It is from this that she feels she honed her lateral thinking skills, learning to embrace and even celebrate perceived problems, or just to look at a form in a new way.

This small collection of work shows some examples of exactly that:
Big Sur is based on an original carving in Big Sur jade, she fell in love with this small tactile piece and has cast it in many materials and these hand cast and polished resin limited editions are like small translucent jewels that really do beg to be touched!

‘Shadow’ and Evolved Shadow are forms she evolved by slicing through Big Sur, re-scaling and then re-orienting it and in some case hand carving them after that … so they are all members of the same family.

Kate studied sculpture at Heatherleys School of Fine Art in London, has exhibited work in both the UK and USA, and has work in private collections in both countries.

“I have always loved living in the countryside surrounded by the beauty of nature. The natural forces of the sun, wind, rain, and sea, create the most awe inspiring sculptural forms. I am inspired by these ‘designs by nature’ and look to embody them in my work – creating organic, sensual forms that respond to the material in which they are made. Combining controlled finishes with the natural ‘imperfections’ caused by the nature of the material is an intrinsic part of my process, creating a coexistence of control and the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi–Sabi ,the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.”
