James Decent

James Decent (b. 1985) grew up in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District, where the shifting boundary between city and open countryside first shaped his visual language. From an early age, his work reflected this dialogue between built form and the organic rhythms of landscape — a tension that continues to inform his painting today.

Originally trained as an architect in Nottingham and London, James developed a rigorous understanding of structure, proportion, and spatial composition. While architecture sharpened his draughtsmanship and sense of construction, painting became the medium through which he could pursue something less measurable and more atmospheric: the experience of light in nature.

At the heart of James’s practice is the study of light. Closely observing and capturing how it filters through trees, breaks across foliage, and transforms the familiar into transient moments of atmosphere. He is drawn to the complexity of natural forms; the interlacing branches, shifting shadows, and luminous colour relationships that animate woodland. Trees serve not only as subject matter but as structures of rhythm and movement, framing space while dissolving into light.

Working predominantly in oil, he continually explores how colour temperature, tonal contrast, and brushwork can evoke depth, warmth, and the sensation of being immersed in a place. His paintings aim to capture not simply the appearance of landscape, but the atmosphere and emotional resonance of standing within it — where light, air, and form converge.
